Quincy and his wife, Whitni, found themselves at a pivotal time in their careers. They were both ready for a new challenge. On the drive home from a family vacation in Utah, they came up with their new business idea – all centered around camping and their passion for the outdoors. As Quincy says with his engaging smile, “What’s better than waking up in the wilderness at dawn, building a fire, and percolating a delicious morning cup of coffee? Nothing!” And the dream was born.
Months of planning and research resulted in a flavorful innovation. Roasting their specially selected coffee beans over a campfire is a direct reflection of their family passion.
Even though their timing wasn’t perfect, Campfire Coffee thrives. They opened their business across the street from the University YMCA in March 2020 right before the entire country closed down to the pandemic. Not only did they survive, they exceeded expectations and continue to do so. This is due to Quincy’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for community. He plans to continue to grow the business to include more locations, an increased online retail presence, and a foundation to support community endeavors related to outdoor experiences and education.
When asked for advice Quincy might give to those just starting out with their new business idea, he stressed the importance of understanding the theory behind effectual entrepreneurialism (www.effectuation.org) and how to apply it to practical experiences. Another piece of advice for would-be entrepreneurs is to write it all down. When things got rough before we got off the ground, I started journaling. Reflecting on the day, it's challenges and it's wins and how the actions I took served the big goals we wanted to achieve (which at the time was to just get open). Quincy also reiterated the importance of perseverance and being authentic and remaining true to oneself.
Quincy and Whitni reside in Tacoma with their three awesome children.
