In the Summer of 2019, Nagaoka International Corporation graciously donated a CHEMILES groundwater treatment system to UW Tacoma's research lab at the Center for Urban Waters. This exciting technology pumps water out of the ground and cleans it using a sand filtration column filled with biological colonies, which remove contaminants through biological processes. This process doesn't require any chemicals or produce any toxic waste and requires relatively small amounts of power.
This kind of biological remediation technology has been widely used to remove iron and manganese in the CHEMILES and other similar systems. Scientists at UWT@CUW are interested in finding out what other contaminants we can remove from water by changing the types of bacteria that colonize the sand filter.
