What are Faculty Learning Communities?

Unlike individual workshops, committees or taskforces, Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) inspire a continuous process of learning and developing in a supportive environment with colleagues. They can be cohort or topic based, formal or informal, discipline specific or interdisciplinary. All FLCs build community, engage in reflective practice, and develop an interest in the scholarship of teaching, learning and assessment. FLCs promote empathy, openness, and trust in order to engage complex problems while energizing and empowering participants. Most importantly FLCs have the potential to transform educational institutions into liberatory spaces.
