In FY21, UW Tacoma's annual revenue was $98.8 million. Tuition revenue made up 48% of that.
Our top sources of revenue are tuition and state support. These two sources together are responsible for three-quarters of UW Tacoma's revenue.
UW Tacoma's budget for FY20 was $73.2 million. Academic Affairs (including all of the schools) accounted for 53% of the total.
Faculty salaries: $27.3 million
Staff salaries: $17.5 million
Total: $44.8 million
Total cost of benefits was $12.9 million.
In FY20, we spent $2.3 million on debt service and $1.2 million on utilities.
Annual resident tuition at UW Tacoma is currently $11,853.
7.02% of UW Tacoma alumni donated to the UW overall; 2.27% donated to UW Tacoma.
UWT uses an incremental budget model. In other words, we take each unit’s existing budget and look at their new requests and add funding. That isn’t to say that we never reduce budgets, but that is generally done when we do budget reduction exercises. A budget may also be reduced if there is a major change, such as when an open position is determined not to need refilling.
The UW Seattle campus uses an activity-based budget model. This is a budgeting method where activities are thoroughly analyzed every cycle to predict costs without taking into account historical costs.
After removing existing commitments, the current reserve is approximately $15.6 million. The reserve includes both DOF and GOF funds. The GOF portion can be used for any expense that is allowed to be covered by state or tuition funds. The DOF portion can only be used for capital projects that are managed through the Capital Projects Office. GOF funds can be used for major capital projects specifically for lab and classroom activities (in other words, only items that are for instructional student use).
The reserve is intended to cover unexpected or one-time expenses, like a roof leak or a temporary consultant. The reserve cannot be used for on-going expenses such as a permanent employee’s salary and benefits, as reserves are one-time funds and will only be replenished by annual unspent contributions.
As of July 1, 2020, the market value of UW Tacoma’s endowment stood at $48.7 million. The endowment consists of private gift funds allocated for specific purposes by donors (i.e. for student needs and scholarships; or program support for faculty and students).
At UW, only earnings from invested funds are spent each year. For FY20, $675,932 was available for student needs and scholarships, $1,152,737 was available for program support for faculty and students, and $18,725 was available for other expenses. The central UW endowment, which stands at $3.56 billion and is inclusive of UW Tacoma’s endowment, also funds a portion of the fundraising efforts on all three campuses.
