Skills, Insights, and Real-World Experience
Software engineers are in high demand as nearly every company now relies on technology, providing numerous career opportunities and the possibility of independent work. Our professional development center is dedicated to ensuring you are SET for Success by enhancing your basic programming skills and teaching best practices in software development and design.
Over the course of a year, students will cover core computer science concepts, including data structures, algorithms, software engineering, and systems programming, through lectures and hands-on labs. The program features guest speakers from the industry and culminates in a project-based capstone course focused on team-oriented full stack development.

Who should apply?
The ideal SDE certificate candidate:
- has a bachelor’s degree, not in computer science
- has basic computer programming knowledge
- is looking to further extend their programming and software development skills
Applications are completed through the UW Grad School
- Select "Create a Profile"
- Complete the corresponding applicant profile form and continue to the Graduate School Application.
- In “Step 1” of the Application, choose "Graduate"
- Search by campus, and select "Tacoma"
- In “Step 2” of the Application, choose "Graduate Certificate in Software Development Engineering" as the program.
The 6 courses GCSDE students will take are:
- TCSS 501 - Analysis of Algorithms and Data Structures, Autumn Quarter
- TCSS 502 - Object Oriented Programming (OOP), Autumn Quarter
- TCSS 503 - Algorithms and Problem Solving for Software Engineers, Winter Quarter
- TCSS 504 - Software Engineering and Development Techniques, Winter Quarter
- TCSS 505 - Systems Programming, Spring Quarter
- TCSS 506 - Practical Full Stack Development, Spring Quarter
All courses are offered online on Saturdays (and available for review after class sessions). Students, classmates, and instructors interact online at set times for office hours, mentoring, and relationship/team building. For the full course description, visit the GCSDE course page:
