The Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) for the two-quarter FYW sequence, TWRT 120: Academic Writing I and TWRT 121: Academic Writing II, are listed below. The one-quarter FYW course option, TCORE 101: Introduction to Academic Writing, uses CORE program SLOs, and faculty teaching TCORE 101 also use SLOs from the lists below.
TWRT 120:
- Identify and reflect upon rhetorical features, such as audience, purpose, context, and genre, and incorporate such knowledge in writing practices.
- Revise in ways that re-see, rethink, and research new ideas in order to substantively change early drafts into refined later drafts.
- Reflect as a way to understand one’s own processes, beliefs, and attitudes about writing and develop flexible practices for the future.
- Engage in research ethically through locating, evaluating, and citing sources, not only as a means of supporting one’s position or thesis, but also as a way of discovering what has been said and whose voice is missing.
- Demonstrate awareness of the dominance of academic discourse and analyze one’s own language choices in different contexts and communities. Engage critically and ethically with these concepts.
TWRT 121:
- Reinforce understanding of audience, purpose, context, and genre, and incorporate such knowledge in writing practices.
- Revise in ways that re-see, rethink, and research new ideas in order to substantively change early drafts into refined later drafts.
- Interrogate one’s own processes, beliefs, and attitudes about writing and develop flexible practices for the future.
