On Veterans Day, we pause to honor those who have served in the armed forces, including many in our campus community. At UW Tacoma, 19% of students are military-affiliated, and we are proud to support them in achieving their academic and career goals. The Veteran and Military Resource Center offers resources, guidance, and programs tailored for military-connected students, including hands-on training for veterans who aspire to start their own businesses and assistance accessing VA educational benefits and Washington State tuition waivers.
Today (November 8), UW Tacoma’s Student Veteran Organization (SVO) will plant flags along the Prairie Line Trail in honor of veterans who’ve served as members of the U.S. Armed Forces — a cherished campus tradition since 2017. During the flag planting, Army veteran and UW Tacoma alum Mark Glenn (’95, ’01) — also known as the spirited, community-focused Sergeant Husky — will hand out free tickets (first come, first served) to the UW Salute to Service football game scheduled for Friday, November 15, at Husky Stadium.
Then, on Monday, November 11, SVO, Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE), and other campus partners will hold a ceremony at the Museum of Glass to celebrate the entire UW Tacoma military-connected community. The event will feature a family-friendly dinner and a keynote address by Dr. Leander Yazzie, UW Tacoma’s Tribal Relations Liaison, a member of the Navajo Nation, and a U.S. Army veteran.
Each year, all three UW campuses come together for Veterans Appreciation Week. We encourage you to participate in honoring our military Huskies by attending one or more of these events.
To all veteran students, staff, faculty, and alumni: we thank you for your service. We are proud to support you and your families in reaching your academic and professional goals, and we’re grateful for your ongoing contributions to our community.
