November 11 is Veterans Day in the U.S., and all three University of Washington campuses are holding events and ceremonies to express our appreciation for the service and sacrifice of those who have military connections in our community.
At UW Tacoma, the Veterans and Military Resource Center (VMRC) is the focal point for activities in 2023.
In the list below, if an event is held at VMRC, the location is the UW Tacoma Veteran & Military Resource Center, 3rd Floor, Tioga Library Building on the UW Tacoma campus (see map).
Nov. 6, 9 a.m. - Veterans Day Flag Planting – Prairie Line Trail
Help the Student Veteran Organization and Mark Glenn, ’95, ’01 (aka “Sergeant Husky”) plant flags in honor of veterans along the Prairie Line Trail that passes through campus. This beloved annual tradition began in 2017. Sergeant Husky will be handing out free tickets (first come, first served) to the UW Salute to Service football game on Sat. Nov. 11.
Nov. 7, 10 a.m. – Wounded Warrior Project Outreach & Brunch - VMRC
The Wounded Warrior Project is a national non-profit that provides mental heath services, career counseling and long-term rehabilitative care to millions of veterans and their families. The VMRC will host a brunch in partnership with WWP to introduce the organization and its services to the UW Tacoma military-affiliated community.
Nov. 8, 12 noon – Sergeant Husky’s Operation Turkey Drop – VMRC
Every year, UW Tacoma veteran Mark Glenn, ’95, ’01, aka “Sergeant Husky,” organizes a fund-raiser called Operation Turkey Drop. In 2023, his goal is to raise $5,000 to provide Thanksgiving turkeys, hams and gift cards to Pierce County military families in need in the Washington National Guard and to student veterans and their families in need at UW Tacoma.
At the event, student veterans will receive gift cards to purchase holiday meal items. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is requested.
Nov. 9, 6 p.m. – UW Tacoma Veteran/Military-Connected Appreciation Ceremony & Dinner – The Museum of Glass
The UW Tacoma Student Veteran Organization, the Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE) and other campus organizations will host an in-person ceremony to recognize and honor the entire UW Tacoma military-connected community – veterans, active service members, alumni and family members – with a special family-friendly dinner. NOTE: registration for this event has closed.
Other events will be organized and held on UW’s Seattle and Bothell campuses. The UW Alumni Association Veteran Appreciation website has details.
