Dr. Cheryl Greengrove named Associate Vice Chancellor for Research
Dr. Cheryl Greengrove has been appointed as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research. Dr. Greengrove brings a wealth of experience to this important position, which provides vision, leadership and support for academic scholarship, research, and creative expression across campus. Dr. Greengrove will begin her work on a limited basis this spring and engage fully in the role beginning in September.
Dr. Greengrove was among the first two science faculty hired at UW Tacoma in 1996. She holds a B.S. in Physics and a PhD from Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in Physical Oceanography. Currently she works with two interdisciplinary teams of marine scientists; one studying harmful algal blooms in Puget Sound, and the other exploring the physical oceanographic conditions, geochemical processes, phytoplankton distribution and bacterial activity in the fjords of Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds, British Columbia, Canada. While at UW Tacoma, she has received over $2.5 million in external funding from federal agencies and local foundations. Dr. Greengrove’s scholarly interests include pedagogy in science education, and she regularly collaborates with undergraduate students in her research.
Previously, Dr. Greengrove has served twice as interim leader of the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, and she is a current member of the UW Faculty Senate Committee on Planning and Budget and the UW Tacoma Steering Committee on Tri-Campus Relationships.

Advisory Search Committee Charge Letter- November 8, 2019
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for agreeing to serve on the advisory search committee to recruit and recommend candidates for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at UW Tacoma. As you can see, the committee is composed of outstanding faculty from across the campus with a range of expertise. We seek an inspiring and effective leader to serve in the newly revised role of AVCR, which has responsibility for supporting all forms of scholarly work across campus. We seek applicants from among tenured faculty at UW Tacoma who are prepared to serve in a highly collaborative leadership role for the campus.
Your work as a committee includes reviewing the position description, soliciting and reviewing applications, interviewing select candidates, and assessing feedback from the campus community. At the conclusion of the search, I would like to receive from you a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of up to three candidates. UW Tacoma has a strong commitment to diversity, which I ask you to make a top priority as you recruit a pool of candidates. Please establish an interview process that includes a public presentation and discussion opportunities with key stakeholders. Academic Affairs will post the position and collect feedback from participants on behalf of the Committee.
The search committee chairs will be in touch with you soon to schedule the first meeting date. I will attend a portion of the meeting to discuss my priorities and expectations for the position and the search.
