Resume & Cover Letter Review

Upload your resume and/or cover letter on Handshake and receive feedback within one to two business days. To get in-person feedback, meet with a Peer Career Coach during drop-in hours. You are also able to schedule an appointment with a Career Coach on Handshake.

Let us help you through the process of formulating your resume or cover letter, including tailoring it to a specific job or internship opportunity. This is typically done in a two-step process.

  • Step 1: Chat with a Career Prep Consultant during drop-in hours
    You should first meet with a Career Prep Consultant during their weekly drop-in hours (see table).
     
  • Step 2: Schedule a follow-up appointment for review with a Career Specialist.
    Once you have met with a Career Prep Consultant, schedule a follow-up appointment with a Career Specialist.

Meet with a Career Coach

If you want to explore careers, develop internship & job search strategies, practice mock interviews, review application materials (including resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn or Handshake profiles), or take a career assessment, make an appointment with a Career Coach through Handshake!

To schedule an appointment:

  1. Log into Handshake
  2. Select "Career Center" in the header bar at the top of the page
  3. Choose "Schedule Appointment"
  4. Choose ”Career Development Office Appointments” to see the appointment options available.

Career Coaching

Appointment topics may include: 

  • Career or academic major Exploration
  • Tailoring your resume or cover letter to a specific job or internship.
  • Linked In and Handshake profiles
  • Job or Internship search strategies
  • Interview preparation (not a mock interview; that requires a separate appointment)
  • Applying to graduate school
Mock Interviews

To schedule a mock interview, you must first meet with a Career Coach for an Interview Prep session.

Mock interviews are an effective way to practice your interviewing skills and receive feedback from a Career Coach. They are most effective when targeted to a specific job, internship, scholarship, or grad school.

When scheduling, please include the position title or a link to the job posting you would like to do a mock interview for.

Federal Resumes

Federal resumes are very different from the standard resume format you are familiar with. For help getting started or to have your federal resume critiqued, schedule an appointment. If you are applying for positions through USAjobs, a federal resume is what you need!

Career Assessments

Interested in taking a career assessment or just learning more about assessment options? Schedule a Career Coaching appointment to figure out which option is best for you.

You can also schedule an appointment with us for after you have taken an assessment. You can meet with a Career Coach to go over your assessment results and to make a plan for how to use what you have learned. Check out assessments available here.

Appointment Policies

The following policies apply to appointments with our office.

We base our policies and procedures on professional business etiquette and expectations of the employment community. These include showing up, being prompt to appointments, and communicating if you have to cancel or will be late.

The impact on other students is also of primary consideration because every appointment that results in a no-show takes away a time slot available to another student who also needs support.
 

No-show/Late Cancellation Policy

If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, without notifying Career Development in advance, your appointment will be considered a “no show" and you will need to reschedule. After three consecutive no shows, your Handshake account will be blocked from making additional Career Development appointments until you email your Career Coach, schedule a meeting, complete the appointment, and discuss the missed meetings. Email tcareer@uw.edu for any questions.

If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so through Handshake at least 24 hours in advance. If it is less than 24 hours prior, email Career Development tcareer@uw.edu  to cancel your appointment.
 

Driving Policy

We will not meet with students who are driving. Please choose a time you are able to meet with us safely. If you are driving during your appointment, we will have you reschedule.
