I am a UWT Junior participating in the Spanish Language and Culture in Cusco, Peru Summer Quarter 2022. As someone interested in the field of immigration law, it made perfect sense for me to be immersed in a program in a Spanish speaking country. While fulfilling the language requirement in a classroom was helpful, I still yearned to experience more. I hope studying in Peru will be an opportunity to boost my confidence in speaking Spanish and provide me with personal and professional growth for a lifetime.

Exita Lealofi

My name is Exita Lealofi and I'm currently interested in participating in the Spanish Language and Cultures in Cusco, Peru study abroad program. As a major in Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies with an emphasis in Global Engagement, I’ve had the opportunity to learn about and explore different cultures as well as their way of life within the community. This may sound generic, but a study abroad program in Peru purely for the experience would be amazing for me, especially since I grew up in an area where traveling to a foreign nation is both rare and impossible. I intend to learn and experience a whole cultures day to day routine as well as their view of life as a whole.

I will be participating in the Spanish Language and Culture program in Cusco, Perú for the 2022 summer term A. When I saw the description of the program, I was easily captivated. Learning about different cultures and the Spanish language is something that I’ve grown to love over the years; whether that be by traveling to Mexico to visit my grandparents, or just by taking Spanish classes in high school. However, to be able to mix both the travel and the classroom experience into what is the Peru study abroad is something that I am beyond excited about. I haven’t been to another Spanish-speaking country besides Mexico so to be able to experience a different culture, Peru’s, first hand, to learn more about their rich history, art, and literature is an educational opportunity in which I am so thankful for.

Gabriela Romero
arrow_drop_down_circleGabriela Romero (Psychology, Gender & Sexuality, Global Engagement, BA 23)
My interest in experiential learning abroad started in my senior year of high school, when I got two opportunities to serve with non-profit organizations in Costa Rica and The Philippines. Serving the local communities, as well as going abroad for the first time, changed the way I perceives the world. Not only did it influence my perceptions of the world around me, but it also influenced the way I see myself in the world. Following these experiences, I was determined to study abroad in college. Through my time at UWT, I have found an interest in global studies, psychology, history, and culture. When I heard about the Psychology of Food, Culture, and Human Development program in the Czech Republic, I knew that would be the perfect opportunity to apply what I have learned through my time at UWT to a real world experience.
