MN Academic Information
The Master of Nursing curriculum provides nurses with in-depth knowledge and skills related to leading in a healthcare environment of constant change that includes learning theory, teaching methods, curriculum development, and evaluation. Practicum experiences as well as scholarly inquiry are individualized and could focus on healthcare or nursing education.
Graduates are leaders in health care systems, governmental agencies or community organizations as well as nurse educators in schools of nursing, continuing education programs, staff development, clinical education or patient education.
Program goals:
- Evaluate the adequacy of underlying knowledge from nursing science, related fields, and professional foundations as it informs nursing practice.
- Competently assess, manage health-related issues with a defined population or care system, and evaluate the effectiveness of these nursing practices.
- Utilize knowledge and skills in professional practice among diverse and multi-cultural populations.
- Demonstrate competence in development of inquiry relevant to practice, education, or administration.
- Develop and utilize leadership strategies that foster improvement of health care.
- Articulate ethical issues and responsibilities involved in nursing practice.
- Demonstrate critical interrogation of positionality, recognition of implicit biases, as well as knowledge and application of anti-racism principles to promote health equity.

Types of MN Advising
During the MN Program, you will have two advisors to support your academic and professional pursuits.
Academic Advisor
The academic advisor is a SNHCL staff person, and they are your go-to person if you have any questions. They will:
- Oversee your program plan, schedule, registration, and degree requirements
- Track your academic progress throughout the program
- Assist you if you need to take a leave of absence or make any changes to your program plan
Faculty Advisor
Your faculty advisor is a SNHCL faculty member who is there to guide your educational and professional journey throughout the program. Your faculty advisor:
- Develops a mentoring relationship with you
- Helps you explore your strengths and professional interests
- Works with you to develop a plan for academic success and may direct you to resources as needed
- May advise you on your advanced practicum experience or your scholarly inquiry to support your professional goals;
- Recommends you for graduation
You will meet your faculty advisor at the required MN Orientation on the first day of classes, and then you and your faculty advisor will check-in regularly as needed.

The UW Tacoma Nursing faculty and staff recognize that beginning graduate education can be a significant life change. To ease the transition into the Master of Nursing Program, UW Tacoma provides a wide range of services including an MN Program orientation, writing workshops, computer workshops, library orientations, and personal counseling services. In addition, advisors assist students throughout the MN Program. These advising roles are described below.
Types of MN Advising
Graduate Program Advisor
The MN Program Advisor works closely with all MN students to facilitate their adaptation to, progress in the MN Program, and time to graduation. These items include:
- Develop an initial program plan (course work) for the student
- Issues add codes prior to each quarter
- Facilitates on-leave requests with the graduate school (in the MyGrad system)
- Make changes to student program plans
- Processes graduation applications (in the MyGrad system)
Curriculum Option Advisors
Students should contact the faculty advisor based on their chosen curriculum option. Faculty advisors should be contacted in these situations:
- Career advice
- Courses to be taken outside of Nursing
- Discuss the practicum experience
- Research opportunities
