Welcome to Research at UW Tacoma
Our Mission
As an urban-serving university, the UW Tacoma aims to "foster scholarship, research, and creativity to address the challenging problems of our time and place." Our collective Scholarship mission as included in our 2022-27 Strategic Plan is to expand and support a broad range of teaching, research, and creative innovation.
Within this framework, the Office of Research in collaboration with campus partners aims to:
- Work with faculty to identify funding opportunities for individual research interests as well as high priority areas as identified by our campus leadership and community partners.
- Support the full proposal development and submission process
- Support faculty scholarship and professional development
- Provide research administration support to Research Centers such as the Center for Urban Waters
- Provide guidance on the Research Lifecycle to all active faculty researchers and staff across the UW Tacoma campus

Proposal Submission Process
Are you thinking of submitting a grant proposal – start early! – even if you are just thinking about submitting a proposal in the near future (say next few months) – please come and talk with one of us.
As you plan to prepare and submit proposals for sponsored research and other funding opportunities, please remember that the process requires an internal review and approval routing (UWT) AND central Office of Sponsored Programs (UWS) review and approval before submission, therefore:
- For simple, straightforward proposals, please inform the Office of Research your intentions at MINIMUM 2 weeks/10 business days in advance.
- For complex proposals, please inform the Office of Research your intentions at MINIMUM 3 weeks/15 business days in advance.
- What Comprises a Complex Proposal? A proposal is complex if it includes any one of the following elements:
- Cost Share, Subcontracts, Consultants, Vendors and New Proposals, Less than the Federally Negotiated IDC Rate;
- OR, if it includes any two of these elements: Submission of Proposal on Sponsor Website, Multiple or Complex Sponsor Templates, Co-PI’s outside of [UWT]
- Cost Share, Subcontracts, Consultants, Vendors and New Proposals, Less than the Federally Negotiated IDC Rate;
- What Comprises a Complex Proposal? A proposal is complex if it includes any one of the following elements:
