From September 15 to October 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, traditions, cultures and countless contributions to society made by Hispanic Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
This year’s theme, about how Latine communities shape the future, resonates strongly on campus. We have a robust community of Latine students, faculty, staff and community members who have been partners in shaping the history and future of our University.
In recent years, across all levels of UW Tacoma, we have seen growth in Latine representation that expands our impact as an urban-serving university. We have launched a minor in Latino Studies and built relationships with community partners like Mi Centro and Latinx Unidos of the South Sound. These partnerships help us expand access and a sense of belonging to more prospective students. Across the region, our Hispanic and Latine alumni continue to create positive futures for others — alumni like Rafael Saucedo (’17, ‘19), whose career is dedicated to helping people build community and financial health.
On Friday, October 11, we will hold the fourth annual Celebrando Comunidad: Latine Awards + Celebration. Celebrando started in 2021 through the efforts of staff, faculty, alumni, and community members. The event recognizes and celebrates the contributions both individuals and organizations in the South Puget Sound area who positively impact Latine communities. Celebrando is free and open to the public — please register for this inspiring dinner to lift up our local change makers!
