Today is the National First-Generation College Celebration, acknowledging the achievements of students who are the first in their family to go to college or earn a degree. The date commemorates the signing of the Higher Education Act in 1965, which made college more accessible to millions of Americans.
Just over half of our undergraduate student population are first generation. A big part of our mission is providing that access to our community and helping them realize the benefits of a college education.
I'm sure you have seen the display of "We Are First Gen" posters in the BHS hallway that recognizes the success of our first-generation students, alumni, staff, and faculty. UW Tacoma created this award-winning annual poster series in 2016 to serve as an inspiration for students and a reminder to all of us of the difference a college education can make. We will unveil the latest set of 13 new posters on Monday, Nov. 13 in Philip Hall.
I encourage you to stop by the Dawg House Lounge on the first floor of the Mattress Factory today between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. to show your first-gen pride or show your support for our first-generation students.
