Mentoring helps me as much as it helps the mentee. It is a win win situation! |

As a student, my mentors were the source of immense support and some of the most meaningful learning I did as a scientist and a person. Now, I want to provide that type of support and encouragement that meant so much in my career to the next generation of STEM students as they navigate their paths. |

I think one of the most important role we have as educators is to listen to our students and find ways to help them realize their academic and career goes. Getting to know my students, hearing their stories, their hopes and their uncertainties, is my favorite part of being an educator and allows me to have what I believe is often an even greater impact than what I might have in the classroom. |

The way I see it, my job as a faculty member is not limited to the classroom and the lab. All college students need a support network to make their experience a positive one, and I took this job to support student success before, during, and after college. I mentor students before college to help them envision themselves as college students. I then mentor them during college so they do not struggle alone, to celebrate with them when they succeed, and to help them tailor their experience to their future aspirations. Finally, I mentor them after they graduate as they figure out how to apply their college experience to navigate the realities they face and follow their dreams. Mentoring is the most rewarding thing I do! |

I love helping students explore new opportunities and provide them access to experiences that fit their career goals. Mentoring also helps me become a better listener, leader, and overall, a better person. These connections make a truly positive impact for mentors and mentees alike. |

Mentoring is highly rewarding, humbling, and inspiring. To my detriment, I didn't receive or seek out solid mentoring experiences during my undergraduate journey. I'm hoping to provide a steady, positive influence and source of encouragement for our amazing ACCESS Scholars. |

My mentors through my PhD program, Dr. Kent Eskridge and Dr. Steve Mason, as well as my mentor through my Master's degree, Dr. Betty Love, were hugely influential on my life. They opened up opportunities for me, always had an open door, and supported me through both the good times and the rough patches of my academic career. I can think of no way to better honor them than to pay that support forward to our students at UW Tacoma. |

I was a first-gen college student, from a low-income family, and had lots of questions during my college life. Now I am a professor and find many young students having similar experience as I had. I think my experience would be helpful to the students. |

It's fulfilling for me to feel a deeper connection to my mentees and share their challenges and successes. I appreciate the opportunity to pay back the excellent mentoring I've received throughout my career.

When I was a college student, I had no idea how to navigate the college system, and I didn't even know that I needed help with it. Several people mentored me through the process and contributed to my success. I wasn't looking for mentors at that time because I didn't know that I would need mentorship, but thankfully, through various programs (some quite similar to ACCESS), I was supported through my college journey. I'd like to provide similar support to the UWT ACCESS in STEM students! I also just like getting to know the students! |

Science is a deeply human endeavor, and humanity sees and reaches farther by lifting each other ever upward. Mentoring is a very personal example, simultaneously rewarding and challenging, and heightened by the mutual vulnerability of a close one-on-one relationship. My mentees' passion, curiosity, drive, and enthusiasm reignite my own energies and they gift me wonderful, valuable perspectives. Working together challenges me to deep self-reflection so I can better understand myself and refine my personal goals and teaching practice. And we have fun, too. :-) |

Mentoring for me involves shaping student mindsets and imparting experiences that are tailored to their abilities and needs. I thrive by making a positive impact on my students and inspiring and motivating them. Additionally, mentoring enhances my sense of belonging to my university and community and provides me with new insights and perspectives through collaboration with students. |

I think many students could/should benefit from having a mentor. I have been blessed in all phases of my life with great mentors/teachers in many different areas of my own interests beginning at birth with my parents, and continuing through today. |
