Air Purifiers
Indoor air quality continues to be a high priority as we all continue to work and learn in extraordinary circumstances. Integrated Facilities Management carries out the work necessary to keep our physical surroundings as safe as possible including indoor air quality.
As part of this effort, IFM placed dozens of portable air purifiers throughout campus in classrooms, conference rooms, and other high occupancy spaces. These air purifiers provide an extra level of air filtration in addition to building-wide systems that deliver clean air.
All UW-provided air purifiers are serviced and maintained by IFM. Air purifier filters are changed every six months, as well as any time the filter change indicator on top of the machine starts to flash. If you notice a filter light blinking on any air purifier on campus, submit a Facilities Service Request. Be sure to include the building and room number. The air purifier will be serviced by IFM. Please leave the purifier on in Auto mode when the filter change light is blinking. A blinking filter light is an indication to change the filter soon – as long as the unit is on, it is still working and effective.
You may notice that labs do not have portable air purifiers. Due to the nature of laboratory work, these spaces were designed for maximum ventilation.
It is vital that portable air purifiers remain on at all times in the Auto mode, whether the room is occupied or not. This is the most efficient and safe setting. Please do not adjust the settings or allow students to do so.
For general information on ventilation and air purifiers, visit UW EH&S COVID-19 Ventilation FAQs.
