Summer Quarter: Important Information for Your Enrollment Status
Summer Quarter is a great time to take classes that count toward your degree or electives. However, because the summer quarter is structured differently, it’s important to understand what qualifies you for full-time, three-quarter-time, and half-time status. The curriculum is divided into three terms: Term A, Term B, and Full Term, all of which can affect your enrollment status.
Two Scenarios That WILL Give You Full-Time Benefits:
- Undergraduate students who take at least 5 credits in Term A and 5 credits in Term B will be considered full-time.
- Undergraduates taking 10 credits in the Full Term will also receive full-time benefits.
In these cases, you're either taking 10 credits over 9 weeks or splitting 10 credits between two one-month terms.
Two Scenarios That WILL NOT Give You Full-Time Benefits:
- Taking 5 credits in Term A and 5 credits in the Full Term does not qualify as full-time for the summer.
- Taking 5 credits in Term B and 5 credits in the Full Term also does not qualify as full-time.
Depending on your program, you may not always have the option to take classes that qualify for full-time VA benefits. However, most students can usually arrange their schedules to meet this requirement.
Note: If you are taking only online (distance learning) classes, your monthly Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) payment may be reduced, even if you’re considered full-time. Due to the various combinations of hybrid, online, and in-person classes, please contact the VMRC to confirm whether your schedule meets the requirements for receiving full BAH.
Important Information About Financial Aid and VA Benefits
If you’re receiving financial aid in addition to your VA benefits, here’s what you need to know:
To qualify for full-time financial aid, you must take at least 12 credits over the summer term. There are no specific requirements for when you take these credits, as long as you complete 12 in total. However, remember to also consider the requirements for full-time status under VA benefits, as they differ.
If you're receiving summer financial aid, please review this link for more information.
Graduate Programs
Graduate programs follow similar principles, but there are typically fewer A and B term courses available. For detailed information about your graduate program's summer quarter requirements, please contact the VMRC directly.
